Most of us who compete in triathlon are used to early starts on a Sunday morning, so preparing for a race on a Saturday afternoon would seem like a bit of a treat. At 1pm on Saturday 19th August Robert Cassidy and Rodger Wilkins along with around 150 other competitors tackled Tri Lakeland's 750m swim in Lake Bassenthwaite, a 25km bike around the Lake and an undulating 6km run.
Changeable, blustery weather made sections of the swim and bike quite difficult for the entire field but that's par for the course, especially in the Lakes. Both our guys had strong swims placing them in the top 10 going out on to the bike. Rob just a few minutes back from the front of the race executed a swift T2 setting him up nicely to run a number of stronger bikers down. That resulted in him claiming a fantastic 7th place overall from a strong field. Rob's performance is testimony to how much progress he's made this year - great stuff Rob.
At the front of the race Rodge came in off the bike first just ahead of Tri Lakeland's strong bike/runner Mark Benson. Mark & Rodge know each other well having gone head-to-head many times already this year so it was no surprise that it came down to the finishing straight, luckily Rodge just had enough left to snatch the win. That sets him up nicely for his final prep race for the AG Worlds in Rotterdam at the Xtramile Events Leeds Tri on September 3rd. Fellow Racepace athletes Rob, Beau and Sarah will also be competing in the Brownlee's home town - hopefully they themselves will pop down to give some tips and watch some of the action... #Doubtful
Big thanks to Tri Lakeland for putting on a fantastic event - minus the weather!
