On Sunday 13th May, Sarah Black competed in the Grendon Triathlon – a qualifier for the 2013 European Sprint Championships in Turkey. With tough competition it was never going to be an easy race but after recent cold weather, some morning sunshine meant athlete’s had one less thing to worry about.
To qualify automatically Sarah had to finish in the top 4 (registered) in her age-group. Training had gone really well and we knew Sarah would be ‘in the mix’ all being well. Out of the water 9th in her wave and on track to progress through the field. After slick T1 & T2 transitions Sarah was out onto the run. The run which had to be shortened to 4.2km for one reason or another, this is the same for everyone but obviously favours some more than others. Sarah had paced things really well and with most of the run completed had bravely worked her way into the 4th qualifiying spot. It seams like Manchester City weren’t the only ones leaving it late that day though, unfortunately with only a few metres to go, Fiona Beard of York Triathlon Club finished really strong to sneak past and into that last automatic qualification spot. Ultimately Sarah missed out by just 2 seconds. A great performance non-the-less and as she says “there are many positives to take from it”. A few days recovery and she’ll be ready for her 3rd race of the year at St Anne’s on the 20th May.
