Huge thanks to Simon and the superb Xtramile Events team for hosting the draft-legal Sprint and the non-drafting Standard distance duathlon's yesterday - both produced some great racing on the famous circuit at #OultonPark. We had a number of athletes competing with 11 athletes in the Sprint and 2 in the Standard distance. The Sprint was a qualifier for the AG World Duathlon Championships in Aviles, Spain.
First up was the AG World qualifier the Sprint. Just under 300 athletes lined up to tackle the 4.3km run - 21km draft-legal bike and 4.3km run. Beau, Blythe, Gaz, Sarah J, Ben, Jason, Graham, Mandy, Lorraine, Sarah R & Rodge were all wrapped up ready for the gun.
As this was a target for a number of athletes, nerves were almost as high as the determination to race smart and hard.
After just over an hour of intense racing it transpired that we had finished with 2 athletes on the podium, 4 Age-Group wins, 3 other Age-group podiums and 1st team overall and even more importantly - lots of smiley faces. This fantastic showing means that we should have 7 athletes that automatically qualify for the AG World's in June - just rewards for the all the hard work everyone's put in over the last few months.
Later in the day the longer, non-drafting Standard distance race took place. This was contested over an 8.6km run - 38km bike and a 4.3km run course. Congratulations to Mark Egan on completing his 1st ever duathlon and upcoming athlete Dionne Allen who took a superb and convincing overall win for the women in a time of 2hrs 3mins #thisgirlcan #onwards&upwards
Massive well done too all - you did yourselves very proud indeed..
