Early on Sunday 19th July 2015, Neil Ainsworth was one of around 2,500 athletes all set to brave the weather and the gruelling course of this year's Ironman UK in Bolton.
A wet start meant tricky conditions and not just for the athletes! Once the rain stopped, athletes were 'treated' to strong winds throughout the 180km bike ride. This proved very challenging and many of them started the run a little more fatigued than they had anticipated.
With fantastic support all over the course - spirits remained high and most people managed to complete the course within the permitted time. Neil came into triathlon a few years ago, with no swimming, cycling or running background. He has worked his way through the various distances, learning something new with each and every race.
Having decided to take on the Ironman, Neil committed to 6months of training for possibly the biggest challenge of his athletic life to date. I'm extremely pleased to say that Neil executed the race plan incredibly well. After just over 13hrs of racing, Neil completed his 1st Ironman, understandably both euphoric and totally shattered at the same time. (Neil Ainsworth)
Neil also raised over £2,000 for Macmillan Cancer in the process - what a guy.
Time for a well earned rest...
