Blackpool Aquathlon & Triathlon

On Sunday 1st June, Blythe Fourie (15), Sarah Jepson and Racepace coach Rodger Wilkins were all in action at Palatine Lesiure Centre in Blackpool.

Blackpool Aquatics Triathlon Squad or B.A.T.S as they are affectionately known, in the morning, held a junior aquathlon that was part of the North West Series and in the afternoon a Super Sprint Triathlon for all ages. This takes some organising but the B.A.T.S were more than up for the challenge. Things ran like clock-work and all the races went off on time and with no problems. The 8 lane pool at Palatine held waves of 16 athletes that were set off in two’s swimming side by side. A 1km purpose built bike track facilitated the cycle leg and a multi-distance run course around the playing fields meant a very safe and controlled environment to race in. Add to this beautiful weather, it made for a hugely enjoyable and successful day of racing. Blythe had a great race and won her T3 Aquathlon, finishing just ahead of her friend Lauren Cooley – a healthy rivalry in the making there. In the afternoon she also won her triathlon after executing a superb swim, bike & run (Oh & beating all the boys on the run leg too!!)

In the senior race and in the 1st wave of 16 athletes, Sarah Jepson and Rodger Wilkins set off side by side. The distances of 200m swim – 5km bike – 1500m run – meant it would be fast and very intense. Both came out of the water in just under 3mins and quickly made their way to T1. Andy Bray was out in front after the bike but Rodge managed to catch him to come home 1st. Sarah, building on previous weeks had another strong race and won her 2nd triathlon of the season, a great achievement. All this made for an enjoyable day that (for Sarah) was mainly about fine tuning the racing skills ready for Chester Olympic next weekend…
