The Helvellyn Triathlon took place last Sunday, 2nd September – on what was a spectacular day in Glenridding, Cumbria. As it’s one of the highlights of the season, over 650 athletes showed up to race the 1500m swim/38mile bike/9mile fell run.
Victoria Kollard had completed the race back in 2011, but was keen to tackle it again. She set off in the 3rd of 3 swim waves with a clear game plan – pace it. A great swim and a slick T1 meant she was in position to progress through the field with a smartly ridden bike leg – which she did. The run at Helvellyn is not for the faint hearted – it’s tough, very tough. With ‘survival pack’ on and gel in hand she set off for what could be anything from 2-3hrs of ‘running’. Understanding that ‘running’ at her pace is exactly what she needed to do, culminated in a superb time of 1:56:25 and a total time of 4.39.53. The execution of the plan resulted in a brilliant & thoroughly deserved 2nd place in the Female 40+ category.
‘Your fitness’ and ‘An understanding of your fitness’ are two different things. Once you have the latter you can really develop the former. Though not necessarily any fitter than last year (just yet), Victoria executed a much more controlled race, knowing where she was and where she wanted to be. This resulted in a much more enjoyable experience and ultimately a faster time – both, things you should be striving to achieve yourself.
